Boy Scout's Eagle Scout project adds second American Flag Retirement Drop Box to community

SIDNEY — Veteran Service Officer Fred Wiedeburg presented a Boy Scout project to the Sidney City Council at its meeting on Nov. 26.
The project is Brady Kendall's Eagle Scout initiative: two American Flag Retirement Drop Boxes. The first box is already in place at the Cheyenne County Courthouse. The second was formally presented to the City Council on Nov. 26.
Wiedeburg introduced Kendall as someone who is always the first to volunteer at the cemetery to place flags on veterans’ graves each Memorial Day. He said Kendall approached him to be his sponsor for the Eagle Scout project, noting that Kendall saw a need for a "better flag retirement box."
Kendall then explained the significance of an Eagle Scout project.
"An Eagle Scout project is a major community service effort undertaken by a Boy Scout to achieve the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. It involves planning, developing, and leading others in a substantial effort that benefits a community organization, not the Boy Scouts. It demonstrates leadership, project management, and commitment to community service," Kendall said.
He added that completing an Eagle Scout project is a milestone that reflects the Scout’s dedication, initiative, and ability to make a positive impact on their community.
Kendall said the idea for his project came to him while he was at the courthouse and noticed a cardboard flag collection box.
"I came up with the idea to create a better solution," he said. "I later went to Fred and asked for his thoughts on the box. He was supportive of the project. From there, we formed a plan and got to work."
Kendall noted he needs $300 to complete the project, which will be funded by the City of Sidney, with support from Mayor Brad Sherman and City Manager David Scott.
