Kimball Police Department warns residents of online scammers
KIMBALL -- With scammers finding new ways to target victims online, the Kimball Police Department wants the public to stay aware of ways they may be targeted.
The holidays can especially bring an uptick in scams, said Chief of Police Jose Ruiz.
Online scams can come through fake messages, emails, or phone calls that try to steal your personal information, money or identity.
A common method for scammers to attempt to steal money is asking for payment through gift cards, cash apps or Western Union.
“Legitimate corporations, including the KPD, won’t request any type of funding through those means,” Ruiz said. “We won’t call to solicit funds either.”
Fortunately, the Kimball community has not had a rise of residents successfully being scammed, but the KPD has been notified of attempts made to residents.
Protect yourself from scams by referring to the following tips:
- Protect personal information: Never share sensitive details about yourself like your Social Security number, bank account or passwords online or over the phone.
- Don’t click on suspicious links: Verify the sender before clicking on any links. Scammers often send fake emails or texts with links that are designed to steal your information.
- Be skeptical of unsolicited calls: Legitimate organizations will not ask for sensitive information or payment over the phone without prior contact.
- Verify websites: When making purchases or entering personal details, ensure the website is secure (look for “https://” in the URL).
Contact the KPD if you have any questions or suspect a scam. You can also report any suspicious activity to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
