Authorities engage in brief standoff while serving arrest warrant
PINE BLUFFS, WY -- After a brief standoff, a Colorado man was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals on a warrant for a Federal Probation Violation.
The Pine Bluffs Police Department, in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force, served an arrest warrant to 39-year-old Zachery Huenerkop on Thursday.
The U.S. Marshals determined the location of Huenerkop to be at the R.V Park on Butler Ave in Pine Bluffs. They then contacted the Pine Bluffs Police Department for assistance in serving the warrant.
With Huenerkop’s history of being armed and having run from law enforcement several times before, authorities proceeded with caution.
“Credit goes to the U.S. Marshals plan of attack on this to make sure he knew he had nowhere to go,” said Pine Bluffs Chief of Police Austin Smith.
They first created a perimeter around where the subject was located while other officers and U.S. Marshals moved the surrounding occupied campers to safety, Smith said.
Authorities used sirens and loudspeakers to call him out by name, announce their presence, and state the warrant and for him to come out with his hands up.
“After 5 minutes of no answer, a flash bang was deployed underneath the camper, and about five or more minutes later, he came out with his hands raised and surrendered to U.S. Marshals,” Smith said.
Smith expressed his gratitude to the public for their patience in exiting the area quickly and safely, as well as to Laramie County Fire District #5, Pine Bluffs, Wyoming for being on standby.
No further threat to the public exists and everyone may return to their campers.
