Free GED program available through Kimball Public Library

KIMBALL -- The community has access to a free GED program at the Kimball Public Library in conjunction with Western Nebraska Community College. 

WNCC Adult Educator Annette Morgan teaches the GED classes Tuesday-Thursday nights from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. during the winter and 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. during the summer. 

Students are provided with all the instructional materials, a computer, pencils and notebooks. 

Students must be at least 16 years old and unenrolled in any other program like a homeschool program or high school. If the student is under 18, they must have a parent or guardian sign for their enrollment. 

Students will take two assessments that determine how many hours of study they must complete. 

After they have completed their hours and all requirements, they will then have the option to take practice exams before taking the four exams: Math, Science, English and Social Studies. 

They then have a graduation ceremony for students in May. Morgan had two graduates last year and will have at least two this year as well. 

“It’s a fantastic program, and it’s a great asset to Kimball,” Morgan said. 

She has students enroll for various reasons whether they dropped out of school and decided to go back to complete their GED, or one student had been homeschooled but also wanted a GED certificate. 

The timeline of the course varies per student and their commitment. Morgan said she had one student begin in September and finish in November and another student begin in March and finish in November. 

“Have a high commitment and you’ll be done in no time,” Morgan said.
