Patricia "Patty" Kay Jurgens was born on October 2, 1951, in Sidney Nebraska. She was the daughter of Henry and Ilene Jurgens and grew up on a farm East of Gurley. Patty attended Grade school in Gurley and was a proud Gurley Pirate until her Freshmen year of High School. She lettered in Cheerleading and was on the volleyball team. She met Phil Kurz while visiting family out west of Sidney, and they started going steady when they were Freshmen in High School. She lost her father when she was fourteen, and Patty, her mom and two sisters moved to Sidney. Patty took business classes in high school and was fluent in writing shorthand. She went to work for the Cheyenne County Welfare office and worked there for several years after high school.
Patty and Phil were married August 21, 1971. Patty stayed home and raised four children, Alisa, Brian, Colette, and Dawn. After Dawn started grade school, Patty went back to the workforce and worked for Gaston Pharmacy for over ten years. She would take summers off and go on fabulous vacations to Texas and traveled north to South Dakota, where she lived with her husband and children in a trailer house while cooking meals three times a day for Kurz Combining. In 1995 she went to work for Safeway, working first as a checker, and then moving to the file maintenance department where she remained until her retirement in 2011. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. In her younger years, Patty was a member of a local club volleyball team and was a member of the local women’s bowling league as well. She enjoyed babysitting her grandbabies and going to their dance recitals, ball games, and concerts. She did not enjoy going out to the farm. Ever. But was always willing to go for parts whenever needed. She did, however, enjoy taking trips to South Dakota to visit her aunt’s and go “Rock Hunting” for decorative rocks to add to her garden.
She is survived by her husband Phil of 53 years, children Alisa (Steve) Darnall, Brian (Sheri) Kurz, Colette Kurz, all of whom live in Sidney, and Dawn (Zach) Roth of Omaha. Her grandchildren Kassidy (Seth) Cox, Jakob (Faith) Kurz, Kaitlyn Darnall, Owen Kurz, and Nicolas, Colum, Effy, and Elenor Roth. One great granddaughter Blake Kurz, one nephew Jamie (Candace) Hanway and two sisters Sandra Jacobs and Lorie (Bart Bondegard) Jurgens.
She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Ilene, Stepdad Larry Rahe, and her parents-in-law Howard and Violet Kurz.
