Evacuation orders for residents near Maxwell fire lifted for second time

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Several volunteer fire departments battled a wildfire northwest of Maxwell Wednesday.
North Platte Fire Chief Dennis Thompson said crews were battling the fire near the GrayBull Golf Course.
The North Platte Police Department asked residents from North Maxwell Road to Highway 83 to evacuate. That order was lifted at 5:40 p.m., only to be reinstated 40 minutes later.
Residents are being asked to evacuate north of GrayBull Golf Course, north to Neiden Road and to the east.
The evacuation order was lifted for a second time at 7:36 p.m.
The Salvation Army in North Platte and CERT volunteers were on standby to provide shelter for those displaced.
Stapleton Public Schools canceled after-school practices due to smoke in the area.
Region 51 Emergency Manager Brandon Myers was notified about the fire at 1:30 p.m. and said the fire has burned roughly 6,000 acres and is not aware of any structures that are impacted.
Myers said at one point the fire broke into two separate fires and jumped North Maxwell Road.
