ALLIANCE, Neb. — Law enforcement agencies expanded the search for Harley Salway III beyond western Nebraska as they continue efforts to locate the fugitive, the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday.

New information suggests Salway, who was previously believed to be in the Alliance or Scottsbluff area, may have fled the region. Authorities now believe he may be in Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming or New Mexico, where he is known to have connections.

Investigators released updated photos of Salway, noting that he may have removed his facial hair in an attempt to evade law enforcement or avoid recognition by the public.

Salway, 34, is wanted in connection to serious charges filed in Box Butte County, including first-degree sexual assault, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, and first-degree false imprisonment. Warrants were issued in February 2024 after Salway absconded from supervision. He was later apprehended in December but was inadvertently released from Scotts Bluff County Jail earlier this month after a communication lapse between agencies.

Authorities urge the public not to approach Salway, who may be armed with a handgun. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office at (308) 762-6464 or the Alliance Police Department at (308) 762-4955.

Officials stress community assistance plays a critical role in locating fugitives and maintaining public safety. While law enforcement believes there is no immediate danger to the public, they urge residents to remain vigilant.
