SIDNEY, Neb. — Sidney Mayor Brad Sherman formally submitted his resignation from the Sidney City Council, bringing an end to more than five years of public service to the community.

Sherman, who served as mayor for the past three years, announced Thursday he will step down to accept a new management position with UPS in Grand Island. His final city council meeting will be Tuesday.

“Super tough decision to leave Sidney and all we’ve done there,” Sherman said. “It was a lot of fun and a lot of work. The people of Sidney made it an easy job supporting them. I feel like the council and city is in a good position where we can reconfigure.”

Sherman began his career with UPS in Kearney and has worked in Lincoln, Beatrice and western Nebraska. He’s spent the past 28 years with the company, managing operations in Sidney, Scottsbluff and Alliance. The move to Grand Island brings him closer to family.

Since being elected to the city council in 2018, Sherman has been involved in several local initiatives, including restructuring Sidney’s strategic plan, adjusting council meeting times to increase accessibility and supporting business growth.

“Recently, the restructuring of our strategic plan, creating opportunities and keeping businesses in town,” he said. “The biggest success was providing opportunities and support for citizens to make the town successful.”

Sherman highlighted the city’s purchase of the 13th Street building and its eventual sale to WTA as a project he was particularly proud of.

He and his wife Michelle have three children and four grandchildren.

Sherman has been active in local civic organizations, including the United Way of Western Nebraska, the Sidney chapter of TeamMates Mentoring Program, and advisory boards in Scottsbluff and Box Butte County.
