Flash flood warning issued for southeastern Scotts Bluff County

GERING, Neb. — The National Weather Service in Cheyenne issued a flash flood warning Tuesday evening for southeastern Scotts Bluff County, including Gering, Melbeta and the Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area.
The warning remains in effect until 9 p.m.
At 5:57 p.m., Doppler radar indicated between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain had already fallen, with an additional 1 to 2 inches possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly, according to the weather service.
Forecasters said flooding may affect small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, along with other low-lying or poor-drainage locations.
Residents are urged to use caution and avoid traveling through flooded areas.
“Turn around, don’t drown,” the weather service said. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”
Motorists are advised to monitor weather alerts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
