Chase County, Holdrege claim district titles at Class C-5 cross country meet in Ogallala

OGALLALA — Chase County and Holdrege came away with team championships Wednesday at the Class C-5 District Cross Country Meet at Crandall Creek Golf Course in Ogallala, earning automatic bids to next week’s NSAA State Championships in Kearney.
Chase County captured the girls’ team title with 35 points, placing four runners in the top 15. The Longhorns were led by Addison Hauxwell, who finished fourth overall in 20 minutes, 39.59 seconds. Teammates Alayna Smith (eighth, 21:20.65) and Tessa Smith (ninth, 21:35.08) also landed in the top 10, while Liz Hanna placed 15th in 22:08.07.
Gothenburg’s Scout Bell won the girls’ individual title, finishing in 20:00.77. Kearney Catholic’s Jaelyn Witter was runner-up in 20:18.56, followed by Minden freshman Adelyn Whitten in 20:36.18. Gothenburg took second in the team standings with 45 points, and Kearney Catholic finished third with 58.
Sidney placed sixth overall with 103 points. Chadron finished fifth with 63 points, paced by Gracie Calkins, who took sixth in 21:01.18, and senior Jentsyn Fuller, who placed 10th in 21:46.42.
In the boys’ division, Holdrege ran away with the district championship, scoring 28 points behind a strong pack that included three top-ten finishers. Sam McQuistan led the Dusters in third place with a time of 16:47.15, followed by teammates Michael Golus (fifth, 17:03.96) and Roman Urbom (seventh, 17:14.50).
Gothenburg’s Tyler Hetz won the boys’ race in 16:23.17, edging teammate Bryson Neels (16:42.03) for the individual crown. The Swedes finished second in the team standings with 36 points, while Minden took third with 59.
Cozad’s Koang Deng placed fourth in 16:50.30 to help the Haymakers to a fifth-place team finish. Chadron’s Conrad Kaminski (ninth, 17:41.07) and Minden’s Javier Perales (10th, 17:43.13) rounded out the top 10.
Sidney placed eighth as a team with 134 points.
The top three teams and top 15 individuals from each race qualified for the NSAA Class C State Cross Country Championships, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 24, at the Kearney Country Club.
