SIDNEY, Neb. — The Sidney Police Department will open applications next month for its Spring 2026 Citizens Academy, a program designed to give community members an inside look at local law enforcement.

According to the department, the academy is intended to strengthen relationships between officers and the public through education and hands-on experience. Participants will attend several Saturday classes focused on the daily responsibilities of a Sidney police officer.

The program will cover topics including evidence processing, use-of-force laws and training and criminal investigations. Participants will also take part in skills assessments through simulated scenarios. Ride-alongs with patrol officers are highly encouraged to give attendees firsthand exposure to police work.

The Citizens Academy is open to residents interested in learning more about public safety, individuals considering a career in law enforcement and community members who want to stay informed and engaged with the police department.

Applications for the Spring 2026 session will be accepted from Feb. 2 through Feb. 27. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and able to pass a standard background check.

The Sidney Police Department said additional details and the official application link will be shared as the application period approaches.
