LEXINGTON, Neb. — For nearly 19 years, a Lexington grocery store employee has quietly served customers, and now, the community is recognizing her work.

Laurie Zarate started working at Plum Creek Market Place when her son was just over a year old — taking night and weekend shifts so she could balance work and family.

Over the years, she moved through several positions before eventually becoming the deli manager, where she now oversees daily operations and helps create the food that many customers have come to rely on.

Zarate recently celebrated 19 years with the store and received recognition from both her employer and the community for her long-term service.

“It feels like a family here, and getting to take care of people in the community makes it all worthwhile,” said Zarate. “I really enjoy seeing our regular customers every week, and it’s rewarding to know they trust us to help with birthdays, graduations and other celebrations.”

Zarate said one of the best parts of her job is watching generations of families grow up. “I see kids come in when they’re little, and now they’re graduating high school or college. It’s amazing to be a part of their lives in a small way.”

Coworkers say Zarate’s dedication goes beyond her work behind the counter.

For Zarate, the recognition reflects more than time on the job — it highlights the relationships she’s built and the impact she has had on the Lexington community.
