SCOTTSBLUFF - A piece of machinery that processes molasses in the sugar-making process, known as a crystallizer, is being blamed for a fire at the Western Sugar Factory plant in Scottsbluff Saturday night.

Fire fighters from Scotts Bluff Rural, Scottsbluff and Gering quickly extinguished the blaze at 11 p.m. Fire damage was mostly held to insulation in the building.

It was the second fire at the factory in less than two weeks. The Scotts Bluff Rural Fire Department responded to a fire on July 19. A piece of plastic caught fire when contractors were doing maintenance work on a sugar dryer.
