SIDNEY -- Snow and ice covered roads and walkways January 2 as the latest of storms hit the Panhandle Region.

Residents of the Sidney area woke up to a few inches of snow, compared to the expected snow and wind. Later in the day, The National Weather Service reported  snow possibly mixed with freezing rain. 

A driver was examined for minor injuries about 9 p.m. Monday when the four-door sedan she was driving slid off the west side of Fort Sidney Road in Sidney.
 

Creek Valley Schools in Chappell announced Monday afternoon The Creek Valley Child Care Center will be closed January 3 due to the weather.

Congregate Meals at the Cheyenne County Community Center will not meet January 3 because of the weather.

Also, the Bayard Volunteer Fire Department report truck-trailers stuck at the bottom west end of Angora at about 5 p.m. One truck was reported in a ditch and others stopped to put chains on. 

Meanwhile, commuters on Interstate 76 near Sterling were reporting icy roads and truck-trailers overturning because of the weather, and schools were announcing a two-hour delay in Phillips County, Colo.

Colorado State Patrol Troop 3B based in Sterling, Colo., reports Highway 71 from Brush to Nebraska, and from Fort Morgan to Colorado Highway 14 are closed. As of about 9 p.m., authorities were in the process of closing Highway 14 from Sterling to Ault, and U.S. Highway 6 was being closed from Sterling to Brush.

About 5 p.m. Monday, rain began changing to freezing rain and snow in the Sidney area.

The City of Sidney issued a Snow Emergency Monday "effective until further notice" because of the forecasted storm.

The National Weather Service predicts snow and ice possible through Tuesday morning.
