Weather affecting start of spring sports schedule in Nebraska Panhandle
SIDNEY – The high school spring sports season is always challenging and unpredictable, and the start of the 2023 season is no different. With the first competitions scheduled for this week, the weather forecast is already dictating changes. Sidney’s home track and field meet has been moved up a day while the Red Raiders' first golf meet in North Platte has been postponed.
With temperatures forecast to be in the 30s, winds between 20 and 30 miles per hour, and a mixture of rain and snow, the John Ganser Track and Field Invitational scheduled for Saturday morning at Weymouth Field has been moved to Friday afternoon. Field events will begin at 12:30 p.m. with running events getting underway at 1:30 p.m. Teams originally scheduled to compete in two divisions are: Alliance, Burns WY, Chadron, Cheyenne South, Creek Valley, Gering, Gordon-Rushville, Gothenburg, Ogallala, and Sidney.
Meanwhile, the North Platte Golf Invitational scheduled for Friday at River's Edge Golf Course in North Platte has been postponed. The 12-team field included Alliance, Broken Bow, Gering, Gothenburg, Hastings, Lexington, McCook, North Platte, Ogallala, N.P. St. Pat's, Sidney, and Valentine. No makeup date has been scheduled.
The Morrill Early Bird Track Meet has been moved to Friday at 9 a.m. instead of Saturday due to the weather forecast.
