Interstate 80 reopens in Nebraska Wednesday morning; Highway 30 remains closed

SIDNEY - A main travel artery in Nebraska reopened to post-holiday traffic shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday after being closed for nearly 19 hours because of a blizzard that surged through the state the day after Christmas.
The Nebraska Department of Transportation announced Interstate 80 was open in both directions from the Nebraska-Wyoming border to Kearney. I-80 was also reopened in Wyoming from Cheyenne to the Nebraska-Wyoming border.
The interstate began closing shortly after noon on Tuesday and eventually expanded from Cheyenne to Kearney - a 317 mile stretch. Five to 10 inches of snow was forecast to fall across the I-80 corridor. Gusty winds created blizzard conditions with blowing and drifting snow.
The eastbound lanes of Interstate 76 from Sterling to Nebraska also reopened Wednesday morning.
Despite the road being reopened, NDOT officials were warning travelers to be aware of roads being partially covered in snow and blowing snow.
Highway 30 remained closed in both directions from Sidney to Ogallala as of 10:45 a.m. Wednesday because of drifting and blowing snow, according to Cheyenne County Sheriff Adam Frerichs.
Conditions were forecast to improve Wednesday with any lingering snowfall and blowing snow ending across western Nebraska Wednesday morning. A winter weather advisory remained in effect until 9 a.m. for Cheyenne, Kimball and Banner Counties. Another winter weather advisory was in effect until 5 p.m. Wednesday for Deuel, Garden, Sheridan, Keith, Arthur, Perkins, and Chase Counties. The advisory stretched into other portions of western and central Nebraska.
Any snow that does fall could accumulate to around an inch. Winds will gust as high as 40 mph.
According to the National Weather Service office in Cheyenne, a slow warming trend is expected late this week with high temperatures well into the 40s Friday and Saturday afternoon.
