Sidney School Board approves closing North Elementary

SIDNEY -- The Sidney School District decided the fate of North Elementary School Monday night.
The school will close at the end of this school year.
North Elementary is on the list of cuts when the District learned it was facing a significant loss of state funding.
Superintendent Andrew Farber said there was a "good discussion" at the special board retreat.
"I don't really have much to add. There was a lot of good evidence provided there. I do believe Mr. Meyer and Mr. Schoening are comfortable moving those grade levels into their schools," Farber said.
The third grade will move to South Elementary School and the fourth grade to West Elementary.
Board President Mike Palmer asked what would happen if there is an unexpected influx of elementary students. Farber said the schools can currently handle additional students. If more students enter the District than anticipated, a modular will be moved to West Elementary.
Use of the North Elementary School building will be addressed at a later time, Palmer said. The board approved Farber exploring options for the future of the building.
Additionally, the board approved releasing elementary students early this year, May 17, to give teachers time to move to new classrooms.
