New signage proposed to point the way toward community locations

SIDNEY -- Cheyenne County and the City of Sidney are working together to help visitors find their way to local attractions.
Cheyenne County Tourism Director Kendra Mitchell met with the county commissioners this morning to talk about a new sign program. The signs are designed with messages that are short and to the point.
Wayfinding Guide Signs are designed to have a neighborhood feel while directing commuters to a specific destination. Mitchell said the project is the result of years of work and research.
"The Visitors Committee has reviewed it and is happy with what we've got. Our marketing team is what made this finally come about," Mitchell said.
She said because of restrictions for placing signs near state highways, the signs will be placed within city limits.
"These are signs that will go all around town. I'm limited to only putting signs inside the city limits for this type of sign. What the Visitors Committee wanted to do, based on our budget, is do Sidney this year and next year get all the villages done," Mitchell said.
Mitchell said she has met with Sidney City Manager David Scott. They discussed the Visitors Committee paying for the signs and the City paying for installation and maintenance of the signs. She said her first quote for signs came in at $13,000. The Visitors Committee budgeted $15,000 from Improvement Funds for the Wayfinding Guide Signs project. Each community will be asked to support installation and maintenance of the signs, according to Mitchell.
