CHEYENNE, WY -- Wyoming kids have the opportunity to be named in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Elks National Foundation is hosting its annual Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest for children ages 8-13.

The children are given the chance to shoot 25 free throws, and whoever makes the most wins and moves forward to Regionals. Depending on how they do at Regionals, they can move forward to State, which is held in Casper. From there, all State qualifiers move on to compete in Chicago.

The Cheyenne Hoop Shoot is for anyone from Pine Bluffs, Burns, Carpenter and Cheyenne. It will be held at East High School in Cheyenne on Saturday, Jan. 4 from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m., and kids will sign up the day of the event.

The competition is split up into three categories for girls and boys: Ages 8-9, ages 10-11, and ages 12-13.

The top three winners from each category will receive trophies, and the top six winners – first place from each category – will advance to Regionals.

Cheyenne Elks Hoop Shoot Director Breanne Bell said the competition has been around for over 50 years, and the Elks Foundation started it to get kids involved in athletics.

“There have been declining numbers of kids in sports, so I wanted kids to have an opportunity to do something that is free and get them involved in an activity” Bell said.
