VALENTINE, Neb. - The Cherry County Board of Commissioners has appointed new leadership for the upcoming year. At Tuesday’s meeting, Mike McConaughey was named chairperson, while Martin DeNaeyer will serve as vice chair. DeNaeyer, who held the chair position in 2025, supported the decision to rotate leadership roles.

Commissioner Nina Nelson, who made the nominations, praised the board’s collaborative dynamic.

“I think this board is functioning well, and I wouldn’t want to stir up any hatred or competitive spirit, but if Mike’s willing, I think it would be good to rotate the position,” said Nelson.

DeNaeyer also reflected on the responsibilities of the chair position, noting it nearly doubled his workload during his term.
