KIMBALL -- The third annual Soup-er Bowl at Kimball Jr./Sr. High School is this Friday during the basketball game against the North Platte St. Pats.
The student-led program, Kimball Committed, is hosting the soup cook-off, where groups –either within the school or from the community – enter their award-winning soup for a chance to become this year’s soup-er bowl champion.
“It is a free-will donation, but it did not start out for that purpose,” said Activities Director Darrell Howett. “It was built as a community type event – to hopefully create a sense of community.”
People will make their free-will donation, then get a ticket that lets them sample all the different soups, then they will vote for their favorite one.
The winner gets a Soup-er Bowl trophy made from a cheese grater and a soup bowl. They also give out a prize to the “best dressed” group.
The 2024 Soup-er Bowl champion was the Kimball Helps/Booster Club, and the Kimball Public Schools Administration team won the Best Dressed.
So far, 11 groups have signed up to enter their soup this year.
“We would love to add more soups to the lot or if you just want to come out to join the atmosphere and try a bunch of great soups,” Howett said.
The first two years of the event have been typically school groups who enter such as sports teams and extracurricular groups. This year, however, they are pushing to get more community members and businesses involved, which they do have a few groups outside of the school signed up.
“Although we love the competition side, it is definitely meant to be a community gathering and to promote community involvement,” Howett said. “We’re trying to give people a reason to not just come out and watch basketball, but a reason to come out for other things and have the chance to see a different part of the school.”
The proceeds go to the Kimball Committed, which was created to increase the quality of leadership in the students, the culture of the school, and community connection.
“We try to put the money back into things that improve our school, improve our culture, and the last thing we spent a bigger chunk of money on was we helped buy the big Kimball rugs you see in the gym,” Howett said.
The first game will kick off at 3 p.m., and serving will begin between then and 4 p.m.
