Norfolk Police Officer Arrested for DUI
A Norfolk police officer is on administrative leave after police say he was arrested for driving under the influence.
NORFOLK, Neb. — A Norfolk police officer is on administrative leave after police say he was arrested for driving under the influence.
A police news release says dispatch received a report around 6:30 Thursday night of a person consuming a shooter of alcohol while driving. Officers located the person and identified him as off-duty Norfolk police officer Ray Larson.
According to the release, officers turned over the investigation to the Nebraska State Patrol in order to avoid a possible conflict of interest. Troopers investigated and arrested Larson for DUI.
“Transparency and accountability remain essential to maintaining the trust of our community,” Norfolk Police Chief Brian Tighe said in a statement. “When allegations involve one of our own, it is critical that the investigation be handled independently and objectively. No one is above the law.”
Norfolk Police placed Larson on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal case and a possible internal administrative review.
“I am proud of the professionalism demonstrated by our officers in handling what was undoubtedly a difficult situation,” Tighe said. “They responded appropriately, followed policy without hesitation, and ensured that this matter was addressed in a way that reflects our values. Their actions show that no one in this community receives special treatment, regardless of position or title.”
This is the second time a Norfolk police officer has been arrested for DUI in the past seven months. Joshua Schlote was arrested in August. He was a recently-hired certified officer and was serving his probationary period. He resigned later that month.
