SIDNEY, NE — It’s a day of giving in Sidney. Toys for Tots organizers and the Sidney Police Department doing their part to make sure everyone has something for Christmas.
"It gives us a chance to give back to the families that need help and assistance through the tough times," Shop with a Cop Organizer Sidney PD Officer Scott Tobler said.
Toys for Tots Coordinators Christina Gudahl and Katie Hanes say they had hundreds of toys donated this year. They will go to over 200 kids. Gudahl and Haines believe it shows how great of a town they live in.
"It's amazing," Hanes said. "I can tell you this year, just in toys alone, donated 609 individual toys.
The two have gotten very involved with Sidney’s Toys for Tots drive to give back because they once needed it.
"My sister and I, years ago as single moms, used this program," Gudahl said. "That's how we got started with it. It helped us and inspired us to get out there and be involved."
Sidney’s Police Department also out in the community Saturday. Members of the department took children around to help them shop for Christmas gifts for families. Tobler says it’s a chance to create positive outreach in the community.
"It's a chance for us to reach out and show there's a human side to the badge and give back to the community in a positive light," Tobler said.
Sidney Police Chief Joe Aikens says the program is made possible through donations from local businesses and residents. This year, 16 kids signed up for the event.
