KIMBALL - The suspect in the shooting death of Tessa Ghering, 21, of Kimball, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

According to Nebraska State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas, William Serrano, 36, of Kimball, is accused of shooting Ghering in the head at their home at 602 S. Oak Street at approximately 8:45 p.m. Monday. The two were involved in a relationship.

Serrano was lodged into the Scotts Bluff County Jail.

Garret Goodwin lives a block away from the scene and says a friend across the street from the house was smoking a cigarette outside when he heard a gunshot followed by screaming.

"I didn't believe it for a minute," Goodwin said. "I heard the sirens, but didn't know where they were going. My buddy text me and said it happened. I looked out my back window and I see all the cop lights, I just didn't believe it. I had to call a couple people. The dude's crazy, but he's not like that at all. So, it's pretty wild."

Goodwin says the community feels real sorry for the Ghering and her family and says the whole situation "just sucks."

Two children inside the home at the time of the shooting were unharmed. They're now in the custody of their mother.

According to her social media account, Ghering was a Nurse's Assistant at Kimball County Manor and also worked at Windbreak Bar & Grill.

Her father, Ryan Ghering, of Colorado, posted on his social media account that he's establishing a memorial for his daughter.

An investigation into the incident continues with the Nebraska State Patrol, Kimball Police Department and Kimball County Sheriff's Office.

It's the first shooting death in Kimball County since October 2003.
