CHEYENNE COUNTY, NE — One of Cheyenne County's leaders is stepping down.

Cheyenne County Tourism Director Kevin Howard submitted his resignation to the county commissioners Tuesday.

He says he plans to retire and wants to spend more time with grand kids and fishing.

Howard told the commissioners it's time for a fresh face with new ideas to take charge.

"My dad used to always tell me teachers and preachers should move around every once in a while," Howard said. "I believe the same goes for tourism directors."

County Commissioner Philip Sanders says he'll be sad to see Howard go.

"I can't praise you enough, Kevin," Sanders said. "You've done so much for Cheyenne County and that visitors committee. I mean you fixed so many problems up there, I can't thank you enough. I don't want to let you go. It's hard. You're my friend and you're a friend to all of us. I wish we could figure out a way to keep you, but I get it. I understand."

Howard says his target date to retire is Feb. 26, but he is willing to stay on longer if a new tourism director has not been found by then.
