SIDNEY - Mitch Deer committed his track and field talents on Friday to the University of Nebraska-Kearney for next season. The versatile Sidney athlete will be running the 400 Meter to begin at the next level with the possibility of expanding into other races such as the 800 Meters. Although he had a successful Cross Country career at Sidney High School, the Lopers interest, and perhaps Deer’s interest, is on the track.
Deer’s competed in Cross Country all four years at Sidney. During his senior campaign, Deer placed in the top-5 in 8 of his 10 races and helped the Raiders to a runner-up finish for the team title in the Class C State Championships by placing 17th out of 120 runners.
On the track, Deer has competed in multiple events including 200 Meter, 400 Meter, 800 Meters and numerous relays. Coming into his senior track season, Deer has some lofty goals. “I’d say, under :50 in the 400 for sure, maybe even break the record. That would be one of my main goals,” Deer says. “And winning state for the 4x800 relay.” Deer's personal best in the 400 Meters is :50.98. The Sidney record in the 400 Meters that Deer would have to beat is 48.60 set by Tom Christjans in 1980.
