Sidney hospital, radio station race big wheels trikes for Leyton fifth grader
SIDNEY, NE -- A southern Nebraska Panhandle radio station, 987 The Big Boy, and Sidney Regional Medical Center raced big wheels for a 10-year-old Cheyenne County girl diagnosed with Leukemia.
“About three weeks ago, a 10-year-old named Kennedy Rolle was diagnosed with A.L.L Leukemia,” Big Wheel Racer and SRMC Employee, Catie Bondegard said. “She’s currently in Denver and will be doing treatments for roughly six weeks. Her family is staying at Ronald McDonald House right now, as she’s doing these treatments, so there’s a community effort to help them out with all the financial pieces that go with that.”
A donation from Flood Communications, SRMC, Pedalers Corner, the Cheyenne County Community Center and Adams Autos and Equipment was made for $500 after the race to help the Roelle family with medical expense.
“So, this race was for you Ms. Kennedy. Fighting for you,” Bondegard said.
Kennedy is the younger sister to Macey and older sister to Levi. She’s an active member in 4-H, and loves volleyball and basketball. Kennedy’s Birthday BASH-ing A.L.L. will be held on April 9th at the Gurley Community Hall, featuring a free-will donation dinner, and live and silent auctions.
987 The Big Boy Sales Manager, Justin Richards, crossed the SRMC Finish Line first at The Center to win the 2022 Big Wheel Race
“I just gave 100 percent,” Richards said. “I saw a sign on the track that says always give 100 percent. I just stuck with it and got it done.”
Richards said even though the wind was the biggest challenge, his training helped him win.
“I knew I was going to have to step up my game and train,” Richards said. “If I’m on the bike, I usually ride 8 to 16 miles. I’ve been on diet for over a year.”
Richards is thankful to SRMC for helping put on a great event for a good cause.
“These ladies really played along with us and put on a good fight today, and it’s really cool to have the community involved with stuff like this,” Richards said. “I look forward to next year. Let’s do it!”
Jennifer Elliott correctly picked Richards to win and was randomly drawn for a free membership to The Center and a $50 gift card to Pedalers Corner.
