Spring snow storm stalls traffic on Interstate 80 in Nebraska Panhandle
The Nebraska Department of Transportation closed Interstate 80 and Highway 30 from Big Springs, Neb. to Cheyenne, Wyo. I-76 into Colorado was still open.
KIMBALL - Traffic on Interstate 80 came to a halt near Kimball Monday morning due to an early May snow storm in the Nebraska Panhandle.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, several vehicle crashes and white conditions from heavy snowfall made roads impassable. The Nebraska Department of Transportation closed Interstate 80 and Highway 30 from Big Springs, Neb. to Cheyenne, Wyo. Both roads reopened at 11:20 a.m.
The state patrol says stranded vehicles on I-80 near Kimball were escorted by troopers off the road shortly after 10 a.m. Traffic was stalled due to "numerous vehicle accidents."
A winter weather advisory continued until 3 p.m. Monday for the Nebraska Panhandle and southeast Wyoming. The National Weather Service office in Cheyenne says two to four inches of snow was expected, but isolated maximum amounts of up to six inches are possible.
Potter Volunteer Fire Fighter Kevin Frei recorded nearly a foot of snow eight miles north of Potter, with snow still falling. Five inches of snow fell around Kimball, four inches in Harrisburg, three inches in Dalton, and two inches in Sidney and Peetz.
The spring snow storm cancelled school at Potter-Dix and Kimball Monday. Business, such as Chuckaboo Station in Potter and Anderson Family Foot Care in Kimball, were also closed.
