Three Nebraskan panhandle towns reached record low temperatures on Sunday for May 22nd.
The panhandle may have avoided the snow over the weekend, but western Nebraska did not avoid the freezing temperatures. The low temps this time of year are especially cold for this late in May.
The National Weather Service in Cheyenne placed the panhandle in a freeze warning from Friday night to Saturday morning.
Sidney had a record low of 24 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday beating the previous record of 29 F by 5 degrees set in 1963.
Chadron dropped a degree lower at 23 F over the previous record of 31 F in 1973.
Alliance stretched well below their previous cold temperature record and hit 19 degrees on May 23rd. This new record passed up the old record that was set 112 years ago in 1910.
According to the National Weather Service, the rest of May is looking warmer, most of the high temps sit around the 70's for the rest of this week and on Friday we can see temp reach in the 90's.
