SIDNEY - A winter storm watch for the southern Nebraska Panhandle, northeast Colorado, and eastern Laramie County in southeast Wyoming was upgraded to a winter storm warning Monday afternoon.

The warning includes Cheyenne, Kimball, Garden, and Deuel Counties in the Nebraska Panhandle, and Logan and Sedgwick Counties in northeast Colorado. It's in effect from 5 p.m. Tuesday to 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. The warning stretches into central and southwest Nebraska.

Banner, Scotts Bluff, Morrill, and Sheridan Counties remained in a winter storm watch as of early Monday afternoon.

WeatherEye Meteorologist Jennifer Wojcicki says a warm front kept temperatures around the seasonal average at 40 degrees on Monday, but a cold front pushing into the Sidney region was expected to keep highs below average in the lower 30s on Tuesday.

"With a pretty decent chance of snow coming in," Wojcicki said. "There will be some southerly winds coming in with this system, giving us a lot of that moisture, clashing with that cold front. With that, we've got those good chances of snow showers coming in."

The weather service says there was still uncertainty in the track of the storm which would impact where the heaviest snowfall occurs. However, their forecast for Sidney and Kimball Monday called for six to nine inches of snow, Oshkosh and Chappell could get 7 to 10, and Sterling is forecast to receive 7 to 11 inches.

According to Wojcicki, the best chance for snow will be primarily be overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, before the weather calms and tapers off the rest of the week.

The NWS says hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning commute. Travel could be very difficult, and patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.
