Lady Raiders Edge Gothenburg at the Buzzer

Payton Schrotberger’s shot in the lane with 2.8 seconds to go gave the Sidney Lady Raiders a 45-43 win in a battle of ranked one-loss teams in Gothenburg on Friday night.

GOTHENBURG – Payton Schrotberger’s shot in the lane with 2.8 seconds to go gave the Sidney Lady Raiders a 45-43 win in a battle of ranked one-loss teams in Gothenburg on Friday night. With the win, Class B number 5 Sidney improves to 13-1 while the C-1 number 4 Swedes fall to 11-2.

Sidney, playing without two players out with concussions, put up the first seven points of the game and held the Swedes to one of nine shooting to take an 11-2 lead after the first quarter. Gothenburg responded with eight second quarter points from senior Ellarey Harm to outscore the Lady Raiders 13-6 and cut the Sidney lead to 17-15 at intermission.

The Swedes continued their charge in the third quarter tying the game at 19-19, and then taking their first lead of the night on an Emily Cornwell three-pointer 22-19 with 4:52 to go in the period. Gothenburg built the lead to 33-26, their biggest of the game, but Katie Ramsey’s second three-pointer of the night cut the lead to 33-29 at the end of the period.

Gothenburg senior Kynlee Stauser opened the final period with a three to push the Swedes advantage back to seven at 36-29. Reese Riddle answered with a three of her own and then Katie Ramsey stole the inbounds pass and laid it in to slice Gothenburg’s lead to 36-34. Over the next 4:30 neither team took control of the game. Sidney finally regained the lead for the first time in the fourth quarter on Rheagan Stanley’s only three of the game with 2:45 remaining to go up 40-38. Trailing 41-40, sophomore Kayla Westby’s three-pointer gave Sidney a 43-40 lead with 1:20 to go. Harm tied the game at 43-43 with the last of her game-high 19 points with just 32 seconds remaining. Kayla Westby’s three-point attempt with ten seconds remaining was short, but Westby poked the rebound to Rheagan Stanley who found Schrotberger in the lane for the game winner.

Sidney was led for the second straight game by Katie Ramsey with 12 points while Rheagan Stanley chipped in 8 points. Ellarey Harm made 8 of 13 shots and 2 of her 3 free throws to lead the Swedes with 19 points.

Red Raiders Earn Overtime Win

GOTHENBURG – Even though the Red Raiders matchup with Gothenburg may not have been as anticipated as the girls was, that doesn’t mean it was any less thrilling. The biggest lead for either team was eight points, Gothenburg in the first quarter Sidney in the third period. However after 32 minutes of basketball, the game was knotted up 49-49.

The Swedes started quickly, bolting to an 11-3 lead just 3:15 into the game. Sidney tied the game at 11 with 1:44 to go in the quarter on the second of Isak Doty’s seven three-pointers on the night. Sidney finished the first period on a 10-3 run to trail 14-13 at the first break.

Doty’s second three-pointer of the quarter gave Sidney its first lead 16-14 with 6:22 to go in the half. Sidney extended their lead to 28-21 and took a 28-24 advantage into intermission. Sidney opened the second half with a 5-2 run to build a seven point, 33-26, lead. The Swedes cut the lead to 40-39 heading into the fourth period.

Gothenburg regained the lead one minute into the fourth quarter on an put-back by Braeden Anderson. The Swedes held the lead for almost six minutes regulation until Sidney junior Luke Uhlir stole an inbounds pass and raced the length of the court to tie the game at 49-49 with 1:09 left. Gothenburg tried to hold for the last shot, but senior Wes Geiken’s shot with five seconds to go missed and Sidney grabbed the rebound. Sidney missed a last second attempt and the game headed for overtime.

Sidney never trailed in the extra period, winning 56-52 to improve to 10-4 on the season. Isak Doty led all scores with 23 points. The junior shot 8 of 11 from the field, including 7 of 9 from outside the arc. Jacob Dowse had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
