CHADRON – The Sidney basketball teams notched a pair of Western Conference wins on road the Friday. The Lady Raiders scored their first 10 points of the game on layups to defeat Chadron 53-31 while the Red Raiders survived an aggressive fourth quarter rally from the Cardinals to claim a 67-62 win.
Although the Lady Raiders were once again facing a taller athletic team in the Cardinals, Sidney steadily built a lead from the opening tip. Sidney attacked Chadron, who started three players 5’10” tall or taller, inside. Lady Raiders built a 30-13 lead going into the locker room at halftime, with 24 of those points coming in the paint.
Sidney didn’t let up after intermission, extending their advantage to 39-15 midway through the third period. Reese Riddle paced the Lady Raiders with 15 points. Kayla Westby and Katie Ramsey added 10 points apiece. With the win, Sidney improves to 15-1 while the Cardinals fall to 8-10.
The Red Raiders took their first lead 3-2 fifty-two seconds into the game and although Sidney held the lead the rest of the night, it’s never easy to win in the “Bird Cage” in Chadron. Jaeden Dillehay got the Red Raiders off to a hot start, hitting five of his first six shots, to score 13 first-quarter points. As a team, Sidney made 10 of 13 shots in the quarter, four of them three pointers, to bolt to a double-digit 25-13 lead at the first break.
The Red Raiders continued their hot shooting the rest of the half. Sidney shot a blistering 72% from the floor while building a 43-29 halftime advantage. Chadron rallied in the second half, cutting the Sidney lead to ten, 53-43, heading into the final stanza. Brady Daniels made all three of his three-point attempts in the fourth quarter to lead the Chadron charge but the Cardinals got no closer than the final score of 67-62.
Sidney was led by Jaeden Dillehay’s 20 points while Jacob Dowse and Koleman Kaiser each added 8 points. Sidney improves to 12-4 as the Cardinals fall to 7-10.
Sidney is back on the court Saturday when they host Brush Colorado at the Cabela’s Athletic Facility. Junior varsity games tipoff at 2:00 p.m. The girl’s varsity game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 5:00 p.m.
