CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- March 2, 2023 -- Four members of the Chadron State women's wrestling team and their coaching staff are in Cedar Rapids, Iowa this weekend for the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships March 3 & 4, 2023.
 
The four qualifiers all earned their trip to nationals by placing in the top four of their respective weight class at the regional tournament in Grand Junction, Colorado on February 19. They are Kinsey SmithIsabell OrtizKayley Garcia and Kamila Montenegro.
 
Garcia, CSC's first ever women's wrestling regional champion, will face Marisa Roth of Northern Michigan University in the first round of 143-pound bracket. Her initial match will be in the round of 16.
 
Roth, a freshman, finished in second place at the Northwest Regional Qualifier. She was a two-time Wisconsin State Champ in high school. Garcia is also a freshman, hailing from Vista, California.
 
Smith, a senior from Windsor, Colorado and regional fourth placer, will face Aaliyah Payne-Parris from Sacred Heart in the round of 16. Smith is making her second consecutive trip to nationals.
 
Payne-Parris, a freshman, is ranked eighth in the country at 101 pounds and went 2-0 in her regional to win the championship. She is coached by Paulina Biega, the NCWWC National Coach of the Year.
 
Angela LoRusso of Adrian College drew Ortiz in the round of 32. Ortiz, a freshman of Lakin, Kansas, earned third place in CSC's regional. She was the Kansas high school state champion last year in the 115-pound division. LoRusso and Ortiz will meet in the 116-pound bracket tomorrow.
 
LoRusso, a senior, placed second at her regional. She is one of 10 Adrian College wrestlers that have qualified for the national tournament.
 
Finally, in the 170 pound bracket, Montenegro will face Aspen Dodge in the round of 32. Dodge, also of Adrian College, finished third at regionals.
 
Montenegro, a junior from Las Vegas, is making her second consecutive trip to nationals for CSC.

CSC Softball prepares for home opener

CHADRON, Neb. -- March 2, 2023 -- The Chadron State College softball team will have home field advantage for the first time this season, as they host Fort Lewis College Saturday and Sunday.
 
The Eagles are 3-12 on the season and 1-7 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Skyhawks are 5-10 overall and 3-5 in the RMAC.
 
Last weekend, Chadron State dropped its first three games against Regis University. The Rangers defeated CSC 7-6, 6-0 and 9-8. The Eagles won the final game 11-6.
 
Bailey Steinke, a senior from Lakewood, Colorado, has led the Eagles in conference play, batting .484. Lauren Zimmerman, a sophomore from Reno, Nevada, and J'lyssa Martinez, a sophomore from Denver, both are batting .421 during conference play.
 
Steinke has 15 hits in 31 at bats, while scoring nine runs. Zimmerman has a team high six RBI's for CSC.
 
Delaney Farnsworth, a freshman from Centennial, Colorado, has a team high 4.89 ERA for CSC. She splits the duties in the circle with Tori Haugh, a junior from Commerce City, Colorado. Haugh pitched the complete game victory last week against Regis.
 
Fort Lewis opened conference play by going 1-3 against Colorado Mesa and 2-2 against Colorado School of Mines. Against the Orediggers, two of the games were decided in extra innings and all four were decided by a combined seven runs.
 
Alex Tenorio, a sophomore from Albuquerque, New Mexico, leads the Sky Hawks with a .438 batting average. She has scored a team high 12 runs and has five home runs. Kayla Stone leads the team with 13 RBI's.
 
With a 4-1 record, Amiee Shanks, a sophomore from Tucson, Arizona, has a 4.01 ERA for the Skyhawks. In 43.2 innings, she has allowed 58 hits and 25 earned runs, while striking out 20 and walking 15 batters.
 
Caydee Famworth has a team high 33 strikeouts but is 0-6 on the season and has an ERA of 4.91.
 
Chadron State and Fort Lewis did not play each other last season.
 
First pitch for Saturday's games is scheduled at 12 and 2 p.m. Sunday will begin at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
