Community supports Sidney family involved in tragic accident Friday

SIDNEY - A pair of businesses in the southern Nebraska Panhandle are helping a Sidney family recover from a tragic accident last week.
Jenju and Danay Peters, and their aunt, Lori Wiens, were traveling in a Nissan Maxima when it became involved in a crash with a semi-tractor-trailer at the intersection of Old Post Road and Link 17J in Sidney at 4:40 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Preliminary investigation showed the four-door passenger car was eastbound on Old Post Road when it was struck on the passenger side by a semi-tractor-trailer that was traveling northbound on Link 17J. Nebraska State Patrol troopers discovered the semi had run a red light at the intersection and collided with the Nissan.
Jenju and Danay, students at Sidney Public Schools, were transported by ambulance to Sidney Regional Medical Center for treatment. Jenju was treated and released from SRMC. Danay was transported to a Denver, Colo. hospital for additional treatment. According to a post on social media on Monday, Danay is considered to be "doing really well" after surgery on Saturday.
Wiens, 48, of Sidney, passed away in the accident, according to Cheyenne County Sheriff Adam Frerichs.
A Go Fund Me page was created on Saturday to help the Peters family replace their totaled car. However, to the family's overwhelming surprise, a Sidney vehicle dealership donated a 2015 Dodge Durango, with a service contract.
"It was just the right thing to do," Maddox Motor Company Owner Craig Maddox said. "This family has been through a lot. It's something we can do and help them out."
The Go Fund Me page remained open to donations to help with additional expenses from the accident. The page had raised over $4,000 as of Monday afternoon.
Dairy Queen is also hosting a fundraiser for the Peters family on Wednesday, May 17. A portion of the proceeds from 4-8 p.m. will go directly to the family.
The driver of the semi-tractor-trailer involved in the accident, Gurjeet Singh, 25, of Fresno, Cali. was arrested by authorities and booked into Cheyenne County Jail on Motor Vehicle Homicide and Willful Reckless Driving charges.
The Sidney Police Department, Cheyenne County Sheriff's office, Nebraska State Patrol, Sidney Volunteer Fire Department, and Regional West Emergency Medical Services ambulance responded to the scene.
Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub ordered an autopsy. The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the crash. The Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a coroner investigation.
