Kimball County in negotiations to sell their famed visitor center

After a bid process that yielded no acceptable offers earlier this year, Kimball County is now in negotiations with more than one bidder that would like to purchase the property, according to Kimball County Board of Commissioners Chairman Rich Flores.
"There are about 14 acres out there that were purchased by the county board in 2014 for about $250,000. The property is assessed right now at just under $400,000 and it is our opinion that property should be developed in a way that is more beneficial to the community and to the county," Flores said.
Flores says that they re-entered the open market with the property and are negotiating with multiple groups that he declined to name, or specify the number of bidders.
"We didn't want to see it moved and then somebody just buy it and sit on it. Our intent for that was to get it in production," Flores said. He added that it was the intention of the Board of Commissioners to have the property developed soon by the winning bidder. Flores hopes to build the tax base by making the 14 acres more valuable land.
The City of Kimball is expected to annex the area across from Ace Hardware in the coming months, leaving the visitor center property next on the list of potential expansions. Developers that have shown interest in the land in the past have wanted to build apartments on the property.
