A June 5th planning commission meeting it is the next step in the annexation of the property west of old highway 71 between 9th street and 15th street. The commission will decide if they will or will not recommend the annexation of the property to the city council.
While the full council meets on June 6th, they will not be able to take up the annexation until their meeting on June 20th due to the mandated period of time between when the two bodies can act on an issue.
"I feel. good that we will have it annexed," Mayor John Morrison of the City of Kimball said. He told News Channel Nebraska that while most of the property has been zoned agricultural, the majority will be zoned residential when the space joins the city later this month. The only exception is the property directly adjacent to the highway which will be zoned commercial.
"I'd like to see a place to eat and a bank out there," Morrison said. Sales tax from businesses that might pull travelers off the interstate would help pay for Kimball's booming population. A nine million dollar sewer line that will stretch from the waste water plant to the interstate headlines a growing list of infrastructure projects that will require both grant money and increased tax revenue.
Clean Harbors has announced plans to purchase 60 acres of the property once it is annexed. They plan to build homes on the property that will be sold to employees with incentives and also offered to the general public at market prices.
