SIDNEY -- Who are the local elected officials, and what do they do?

Those are among the questions addressed in Cheyenne County's Government Day November 20.

Government Day is held each year with the support of the American Legion posts. Students from area high schools study the role of each elected official and then spend the day meeting with city and county officials, judges, law enforcement and learning what their job duties are. The day started with students meeting in the District Court Room. There they met county officials and the Honorable Judge Randin Roland, and the Honorable Judge  Derek C. Weimer.

The first order of business was the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by county officials introducing themselves and asking students from a specific school what they do. Following the visit to the District Court Room, students broke into groups and visited other county offices before coming together for lunch. After lunch they learned about the flag folding presentation, were scheduled to meet with the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office, SWAT Team Presentation and Cheyenne County Drug Investigators.
