'Bring on the snow': Consumers brave Sidney weather for Black Friday savings
SIDNEY - "It's awesome," Rob Schilz, of Sidney, said. "It's Thanksgiving. Hunting season is here. I'm ready to go out and kill some birds tomorrow, so bring on the snow."
Schilz was one of several people to venture into snowy conditions to hunt down savings at Walmart in Sidney on Black Friday. Winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings didn't stop Schilz from finding deals on TVs, gloves, kerosene and tape measures.
"There's about three inches of snow and roads are a little snow-packed and getting a little slick," Schilz said. "When you have four-wheel drive and good tires, you can go anywhere."
The National Weather Service office in Cheyenne says light to moderate snow showers will persist throughout the day on Friday. A total of three to six inches was expected in the Sidney area.
Joyelle Kennedy finished work early and decided to check off her husband's wish-list by snagging Dewalt tools on-sale at Bomgaars in Sidney. Kennedy says she saw more people shopping than she thought she would see at 5:00 or 6:00 on a snowy morning.
"Roads aren't too bad," Kennedy said. "Roads are kind of slick. It was nice to see city crews out cleaning roads and everything this morning. Then all the other contractors out moving snow and keeping things open for everybody."
Troy Hughes, with Little Tornado Towing in Sidney, says he hasn't received any calls about accidents Friday morning. He says roads have been pretty good, so far.
Bitter cold temperatures are expected to be present for Saturday with possible sub-zero wind chills, according to the NWS. The weather service says elevated to gusty winds are expected Saturday night and Sunday. Wind gusts up to 30-40mph are expected. Blowing and drifting snow is anticipated due to the recent holiday winter storm.
