Colorado State Patrol arrests Lawayne Mosley, father of Elijah McClain

 

(COLORADO) - On January 20, 2024, a Colorado State Patrol Trooper arrested Lawayne Mosley on multiple charges after a concerned citizen called *CSP (*277) on a suspected driver under the influence.

Just before 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, a motorist called the Colorado State Patrol to report a possible DUI driver near Interstate 70 and Manilla Road, near Bennett. The caller reported that the driver was weaving and not maintaining speed on Interstate 70. A REDDI report (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately) was aired to local area troopers, who then responded to the location. 

The reporting party advised dispatch that the vehicle had exited I-70 and had pulled into a gas station in Adams County. A Colorado State Trooper arrived shortly after and positioned his patrol vehicle in front of the REDDI vehicle.

The Trooper contacted the suspected impaired driver while the driver was still in his vehicle. The driver, Mr. Lawayne Mosley, did not comply with the trooper’s instructions to exit the vehicle per normal DUI investigation practices. As the trooper began to assist Mr. Mosley from the vehicle, the trooper was physically assaulted by Mosley. An Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy, who arrived on the scene during this time, tased Mosely to assist in his arrest. Medical personnel arrived on the scene. Treatment was offered to Mr. Mosley and the trooper, and the trooper did accept on-site treatment.

During the course of his arrest, the driver identified himself as Lawayne Mosley, the father of Elijah McClain.  McClain was a 23-year-old American Black man from Aurora, Colo., who was killed as result of being injected with 500ml of ketamine by paramedics after being forcibly detained by police officers. He went into cardiac arrest and died six days later in hospital. He had been walking home from a convenience store. Three police officers and two paramedics were charged with his death.

Mosely was transported to an area hospital for a voluntary blood test. Mosley did not suffer any injuries beyond the taser contact points. He cooperated with the DUI investigation by completing the blood test. Mosely was then booked into the Arapahoe County Jail on the following charges:

• 2nd Degree Assault on a Peace Officer
• Driving Under the Influence
• Resisting Arrest
• Careless Driving
• Possession of a Weapon While Under the Influence
