Excessive rain could lead to localized flooding in Monday thunderstorms

OGALLALA - Keith, Perkins, Grant and Lincoln Counties are included in a flood watch that extends through Kearney and Grand Island to Norfolk, Lincoln and Omaha. The watch is in effect through Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service office in North Platte says all thunderstorms Monday evening will be capable of heavy rain with potential for brief periods of one inch per hour rain rates.
"While widespread flash flooding is not anticipated, localized flooding as well as rises on area streams and rivers are possible," the NWS said. "Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop."
The concern is repeat thunderstorms could lead to flooding in poor drainage and urban areas.
The flood concern comes as the Ogallala region prepares for severe weather Monday night. According to the weather service, large hail up to baseball size and damaging wind gusts near 75 mph are the main concerns. A tornado or two cannot be ruled out.
