Vehicle collision kills two people in Scottsbluff

The Scottsbluff Police Department is investigating a two-vehicle fatality accident at the intersection of Highway 26 and Avenue I on Tuesday afternoon.

SCOTTSBLUFF - The Scottsbluff Police Department is investigating a two-vehicle fatality accident at the intersection of Highway 26 and Avenue I on Tuesday afternoon.

Sgt. Royce Massie says a small Nissan SUV, driven  was turning north onto Avenue I from Hwy. 26 when a Mazda pickup, traveling west on Hwy. 26, collided with the SUV at approximately 3:28 p.m.

The two people in the Nissan, Buford and Benita Williams, of Scottsbluff, were transported by medical ambulance to Regional West Medical Center where they succumbed to their injuries. The driver of the Mazda, Tony Betancur, of Mitchell, was extricated from the vehicle and transported by medical ambulance to RWMC with non-life-threatening injuries. He was later released from the hospital.

Seatbelts are believed to have been in use by all involved in the accident.

The names of those involved in the accident have not been released by authorities. 

Scottsbluff Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Office, Valley Ambulance and the Scottsbluff Fire Department responded to the scene.
