Gerald Eugene Shepherd was born on September 3, 1942, in Oshkosh, Nebraska, the son of Ralph and Cermal.  Gerald moved to Dix at a young age, where he graduated from Dix High School in 1960. That same year, on October 1, he married the love of his life, Sue Ann Lockhart, at the Methodist Church in Potter, Nebraska. Together, they built a beautiful life devoted to their family and community.

Gary was a man of many talents and passions. For several years, he farmed and ranched in Banner County before moving back to Dix in 1980.  He continued to farm and ranch and later worked as the maintenance supervisor for the Village of Dix, where his dedication and work ethic left a lasting impact until his retirement in 2022.

Gary’s love for the land was matched only by his love for roping, rodeos, horses, and cows. He was an enthusiastic supporter of his children and grandchildren, rarely missing a sports event or 4-H activity. His family always came first, and nothing brought him more joy than spending time with them, whether it was at a local basketball game or simply gathered together at home. His wife Sue Ann, preceded him in death in 2022.

Gary’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and service to his community. His sense of humor, hardworking spirit, and gentle nature will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his son Gary (Kelly) Shepherd of Yuma, CO; daughter Sherry (Stacy) Daily of Dix, NE; sister Sandy Haney of Boon, CO; grandchildren Dusty (Kristy) Shepherd, Todd (Kim) Shepherd, Shayla (Greg) Hoff, Kayla (Steven) Mulder and Shauntae Daily; and also 8 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
