DALTON – The Sidney and Greater Area (SAGA) Fund has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Dalton Fire Department.

The grant will be used to replace outdated overhead doors at the Dalton Fire Department. This upgrade is expected to enhance safety, reduce the risk of vehicle damage, and improve energy efficiency, ensuring that emergency services remain fully operational in the community.

“We are grateful to the SAGA Fund for their generous contribution toward this project. The new doors will make a huge difference in keeping our equipment safe and ready for action, while also ensuring the safety of our firefighters and the communities we serve,” said Ted Watchorn of the Dalton Fire Department.

The original doors were installed when the fire station was built in the late 1970s. They were designed to accommodate older fire trucks. However, with newer and larger fire vehicles in service, the current doors have about an inch of clearance on each side of the truck’s mirrors. The new doors will widen the entry points, eliminating the risk of trucks or personnel being harmed during emergency responses.

“We are honored to support the Dalton Fire Department with this grant. This project will not only enhance the safety of the firefighters who risk their lives to protect our community, but also ensure that emergency vehicles can respond quickly and efficiently when needed,” said Melissa Norgard, chairperson of the Sidney and Greater Area Fund.

The new doors will offer multiple benefits. Wider doors will significantly reduce the risk of damage to vehicles, doors, or the building when fire trucks enter or exit the station. Firefighters will no longer need to manually guide trucks in, reducing the risk of accidents and allowing for faster response times. The modern doors will also provide better insulation, helping to reduce heating costs and maintain the fire station’s energy efficiency during the winter months.

The Dalton Fire Department serves Dalton and surrounding areas, providing critical mutual aid to neighboring communities. With 37 active firefighters, these upgrades will directly benefit their safety and efficiency, ensuring that fire trucks are always ready to respond in emergency situations.
