Gering authorities respond to reported student with firearm

Gering High School was in lockdown for a time this afternoon as authorities responded to a report of a student with a handgun. No weapon was found at the school.

GERING -- The Gering Police Department, in coordination with Gering High School staff, responded to a report of Thursday afternoon of a student possibly possessing a handgun at school.

The student was contacted by authorities. and no weapon was found at the school.

To ensure the safety of the students and staff, the school was on a brief lockdown while officers conducted a thorough search of the building.

Further investigation with the Scottsbluff Police Department at a residence in Scottsbluff resulted in authorities finding a firearm and ammunition that were seized as potential evidence pending a review by the Scotts Bluff County Attorney's Office.
