The Kimball Longhorns stampeded into Oshkosh on Tuesday and trotted away several hours later with varsity basketball wins for both the girls and boys teams over Garden County.
For the lady Longhorns, the 24-21 win was their first of the season in a back and forth, hard-fought battle. It was a low scoring affair with plenty of jump balls and turnovers, but in the end the lady Longhorns emerged victorious, holding off a last minute charge from the lady Eagles. Freshmen JaLeigh Bohac and Emmaline Tabor each scored 6 points, Sophomores Faith Bohac and Clarika Hottell had 4 points each, with Carsyn Chesley, Joey Perry and Grace Moore rounding out the scoring.
In contrast, the Longhorn boys continued their early season dominance of panhandle opponents, picking up a 68-34 win over the GCHS Eagles. With a fast paced, run and gun style offense, and their typical stingy defense, the Longhorns remain unbeaten on the season. Despite another convincing win, the Longhorns were not without a few struggles of their own. Turnovers and missed free throws continue to dog the boys, as they were around 50% from the charity stripe and turned the ball over a dozen or so times throughout the game.
Senior Kyler Lusche led all scorers with 27 points, achieving a major career milestone early in the game. With his 5th point, Lusche joined the likes of former Longhorns Kendall Ferguson, Mike Daum, Brent Klassen and Adam Bohac in the 1,000 point club. At 1,022 career points, Lusche sits just 16 points behind Adam Bohac, and should surpass him this Friday or Saturday moving into the 4th place spot in the record books. Also scoring in double digits were brothers Ryker and Lincoln Behrend with 10 points each. Sophomore Luke Berger also had a strong showing with 6 points.
The Longhorns will have their hands full this Friday, as the Plainsmen from Perkins County come to town. On Saturday Kimball travels to Morrill to face the Lions with varsity action starting around 3pm.
