Boating incident at Lake McConaughy severely injures child, Colorado man cited

A 40-year-old man from Thornton, Colo. was cited after a boating incident severely injured a nine-year-old boy at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area on Sunday.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - A 40-year-old man from Thornton, Colo. was cited after a boating incident severely injured a nine-year-old boy at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area on Sunday.

According to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the boy from Northglenn, Colo. was wading in the water near the Sandy Beach area when he was struck by a pontoon boat’s propeller at 1 p.m.

The boy was flown to Anschutz Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Colo., with severe injuries.

The man operating the boat was arrested and cited for boating under the influence of alcohol, reckless operation of a motorboat, and violating safety regulations of the Nebraska State Boat Act.

Nebraska Game and Parks conservation officers continue to investigate the incident.

Keith County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
