Leyton senior Mercedes Heidemann signs with U.S. Navy

Leyton senior Mercedes Heidemann is taking her next step after graduation, signing with the U.S. Navy to serve as a Hospital Corpsman.

DALTON — Leyton High School senior Mercedes Heidemann officially signed to serve in the United States Navy, where she will train to become a Hospital Corpsman.

"I am overly excited about this next step in my life," Heidemann said. "I want to thank my counselor Faith Jones and my mom Sheena Bunner for helping me every step of the way."

Heidemann, who plans to graduate early in December, will report to boot camp in June. The signing ceremony took place Monday at Leyton High School with staff, classmates and family members in attendance.

She was crowned Leyton's 2025 Homecoming Queen last Friday.
