They are hammer throwers Shane Collins of Bison, S.D., and Daniel Reynolds of Granby, Colo., and high jumper Jourdaine Cerenil of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.
Collins and Reynolds will compete early in the three-day meet. Theirs will be the meet's first event Thursday afternoon, starting at 12:30 (EDT). Cerenil won't high jump until 2:05 p.m. on Saturday. A total of 370 men and 370 women have qualified for the national meet.
CSC Coach Riley Northrup said he's excited to see how his trio will fare. He noted that each has been a pleasure to coach, always working hard and determined to improve, something they have done. He added that all three are in the middle of the list of 20 qualifiers in their events.
Collins and Reynolds have emerged as Chadron State's all-time leaders in the hammer throw.
After almost taking turns with the best mark the eight times they competed this season, Reynolds is the school record-holder with a throw of 203 feet, 8 inches, while Collins is second on the CSC list with a best of 203-2. At the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Meet in late April, Collins broke the meet record that had stood since 2005 with a throw of 202 even and Reynolds placed second at 201-10.
Reynolds is ninth and Collins is 11th among the 20 national qualifiers. Chadron State is one of three schools to have more than one hammer thrower amongst the top 20. Championships host Grand Valley State has three and, like CSC, Missouri Southern, has two.
Cerenil is tied for 11th on the high jump list with a best of 5-8. Only one Chadron State coed—Jazmyn Webster—who went 5-9 ¾ in 2012--has gone higher outdoors, although Chadron native Caryn Martin cleared 5-10 indoors in 1993, when she was a senior.
Northrup notes that Cerenil has "come close" to going over 5-10 several times.
The coach said he's proud to have three young national qualifiers, adding, "I'm also looking forward to what they will do in the future."
It took a mark of 197 feet, 9 inches to be among the nine finalists. Collins had a best of 194-1 that left him in 11th place. Reynolds's best was 189-4, which placed him 14th among the 20 qualifiers.
The hammer throw was won by Tanner Berg, a senior at Northern State of Aberdeen, S.D., with a mark of 228-4. Second place went to another senior, last year's national champion, Austin Combs of Findlay University in Ohio, at 222-9.
Each of the eight entries who placed, threw at least 199-1. Five of the placewinners are seniors, Those finishing seventh and eighth are juniors, and Peyton Barton of Missouri Southern, who placed fourth with a mark of 207-11, is a sophomore.
Both Collins and Reynolds are sophomores in eligibility. Reynolds, who is from Granby, Colo., was ninth among the 20 national qualifiers with a best of 203-8, the Chadron State school record. Collins, a native of Bison, S.D., was 11th with a mark of 203-2, just six inches shy of Reynolds' best.
Collins broke the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's record that had stood since 2005, when he threw 202 feet even this spring. Reynolds was the runner-up at the conference meet with a throw of 201-10, just two inches short of the new RMAC record.
CSC Coach Riley Northrup said his hammer throw standouts can be proud of the improvement they made during the 2022 season, he is pleased with their work ethic and is confident both will return to compete at nationals again in the future.
Collins finished the 2021 season with a best of 189-8. Reynolds's best as a true freshman last year was 172-11.
Reynolds also excelled during in the hammer throw's companion event, the 35-pound weight throw, during this year's indoor season. He set the Chadron State and RMAC weight throw records of 64-11 ½ while qualifying for the National Indoor Championships. He placed 12th in the latter competition with a heave of 61-8 ½.
Chadron State's third National Outdoor Championships qualifier, Jourdaine Cerenil of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., will compete in the high jump Saturday afternoon. Her career-best jump of 5-foot-8 puts her in a tie for 11th among the 20 qualifiers in the event.
Jeffery signs 21 women's wrestlers for next year
CHADRON, Neb. – May 26, 2022 – Chadron State College Head Women's Wrestling Coach Alijah Jeffery announced on Thursday his completed signing class of 2022. In addition to the seven returners, he added 21 newcomers from 10 different states to compete on the 2022-23 roster.
Some highly decorated athletes are among the signees, who boast several state and national titles.
The largest group comes from California. All five of them are high school wrestlers entering their freshman year of college at CSC.
Maria Arrelano of Fresno is a three-time state qualifier and state placer at 191 pounds for Roosevelt High. Kayley Garcia is a section champ and state qualifier at 152 for Vista High in San Diego. Leila Martin of Arroyo Grande is a 155-pound two-time state qualifier and a placer at the U23 World Team Trials. At the 109-pound class, Kacey Schafer is a state qualifier from Orange. Rounding out the group is Brianna Vollendroff of Oroville, a state qualifier at 101 pounds.
Three in the incoming class are in-state prospects.
Lila Bloomer of Callaway is a two-time state placer. Racquel Moore of Beatrice has a place showing at the Midwest Classic Nationals in Kearney. Meanwhile Shania Wear of Gothenburg was a finalist in Kearney, and an AAU state finalist as well.
Standing out among the recruits from Florida is two-time junior college national champion Heaven-Leigh Jackson of Brooksville, who anchored Jeffery's Indian Hills Community College team to a national title in the team's inaugural season. She will fill CSC's 116-pound class. Jackson is joined by 101-pound state qualifier Abby Coullard of Ormond Beach and Alanis Soler of Orlando, who has a fourth-place finish under her belt at the state tournament and will also wrestle at 116.
A pair of Texans joins the program as well. They are Britley Lopez of Borger, a third-place winner at the 95-pound weight class, and Ana Rojas-Zamora, who was a state place-winner in Sparks, Nevada, before competing at 122 pounds on her coed team in the town of Clute.
Another JuCo national champ is 191-pound Sofia Rubio of Tempe, Arizona, who is another of Jeffery's former pupils at IHCC. She is joined from her home state by Payton Kessler of Yuma, who placed third at her high school state meet and fits the 109-pound class.
A talented high school pair from Kansas are Isabel Ortiz of Lakin and Marissa Porsch of Hoxie. Both are state champs and multiple-time place winners. Ortiz was a finalist at Folkstyle Nationals at 116 pounds and is ranked No. 10 in the nation after a 34-1 senior campaign. Porsch projects at 143 pounds and she recently placed at the High School National Recruiting Showcase in Las Vegas.
The remaining four hail from Iowa, Missouri, New Mexico, and Wyoming.
Joining the Eagles from St. Charles, Iowa, Josephine Wearmouth is a freestyle state champion and a two-time state placer in high school. She will either wrestle 123 or 130.
Isa-Bella Mendoza of St. Joseph, Missouri is a place-winner in her home state, as well as a freestyle state finalist. She projects to compete at either 101 or 109.
Las Cruces, New Mexico's Heavynne Robles-Wright is another featherweight who will likely compete at 109 pounds. She was the 2021 New Mexico state champ at 106.
Finally, wrapping up the class is Emma Crichton, the only female wrestler at Shoshoni, Wyoming. Competing at 160 in 2019 and 2020, she qualified for the boys' state tournament both seasons. She also won Wyoming's USA Wrestling girls' state championship tournament.
Assuming all 21 remain on the roster, that brings CSC's program up to 28 strong for the 2022-23 season, which will greatly improve the Eagles' chances for the coming year at dual wins and national qualifiers.
The program fielded eight competitors in its inaugural season of 2021-22, qualifying four for nationals.
Jeffery may have additional funds to continue accepting new team members into the summer.
