NU Notes: Conner Finishes 15th in NCAA High Jump

Nebraska high jumper Mayson Conner tied for 15th in the high jump at the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Friday.

EUGENE, Ore. - Nebraska high jumper Mayson Conner tied for 15th in the high jump at the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Friday. Conner was the only Husker to compete on Friday, the third day of the meet. 

Conner cleared 6-10 3/4 (2.10m) to earn second-team All-America honors. The McCool Junction native picked up his fifth career All-America award. Conner was the Big Ten indoor and outdoor high jump champion this season, giving him four Big Ten gold medals in his Husker career. 

On the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Saturday, Jenna Rogers and Riley Masten will compete in the women's high jump at 4 p.m. (CT).

Rogers Finishes Sixth in NCAA High Jump

EUGENE, Ore. - Nebraska freshman high jumper Jenna Rogers tied for sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field on Saturday to conclude the meet. 

Rogers cleared 6-0 (1.83m) to finish in a tie for sixth and earn first-team All-America honors for the second time this year. The Big Ten indoor and outdoor champion was also an indoor first-team All-American after finishing seventh. 

With Rogers' finish - combined with Maddie Harris' silver medal in the javelin and Axelina Johansson's bronze medal in the shot put - the Husker women scored 16 team points to finish in 14th place in the team standings. It marks the best finish for the Husker women since 2006. 

Riley Masten also competed in the high jump for the NU women on Saturday. In her first trip to the NCAA Championships, Masten cleared 5-7 3/4 (1.72m) to tie for 20th place and earn USTFCCCA honorable mention.

Grant to Receive NJCAA Top Honor

Nebraska running back Anthony Grant will be presented with the David Rowlands Male Student-Athlete of the Year award during the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Foundation Awards tonight in Charlotte, N.C. Grant is being recognized as the top male student-athlete across all sports in the NJCAA ranks, and he is the first football player to win the award since 2017 and only the fifth since the award began in 1993.
 
The award caps a decorated final season for Grant at the New Mexico Military Institute. Grant was also the 2021 NJCAA Football Division I Offensive Player of the Year, the Division I rushing champion, a first-team All-American and the MVP of the National Championship Game.
 
A Georgia native, Buford spent two seasons at the New Mexico Military Institute after beginning his career at Florida State. He rushed for 1,730 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2021, helping the Broncos to the national championship. In the two playoff games, Grant ran for 590 yards and six touchdowns, including 26 carries for 398 yards in the semifinals.
 
In his two seasons at NMMI, Grant rushed for 2,549 yards and 28 scores. He averaged 7.1 yards per carry and 127.5 rushing yards per game in his Bronco career. He posted 10 100-yard rushing efforts in his 20 games, including four 200-yard rushing games.
 
Grant enrolled at Nebraska in January, and he had six carries for 69 yards in the Red-White Spring in April. In his first semester in Lincoln, Grant was also a member of the Nebraska Student-Athlete Honor Roll.

McVeigh Named to Australia Senior Team

Former Husker Jack McVeigh will represent his native Australia during FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying late this month. Australia will play three games during this qualifying window with two games against China (June 30 and July 3) and against Japan (July 1).

This will mark McVeigh's second appearance with the Australian Boomers and first since 2019. The 6-foot-8 forward from Cabarita Beach, New South Wales, has played professionally in Australia following his college career. He spent the 2021-22 season playing for the Tasmania Jackjumpers in the National Basketball League, averaging 12.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

McVeigh spent three seasons at Nebraska (2016-18), playing in 78 games, including 15 starts. His best campaign was during his sophomore season in 2016-17, when he averaged 7.5 points per game in 30 games, including 11 starts.

Burroughs Wins, Qualifies for Worlds

New York City – Former Husker great Jordan Burroughs secured a spot on the U.S. team and will compete at the 2022 Senior World Championships on Sept. 10-18 in Belgrade, Serbia after his Final X series victory. 
 
In the 79 kg men's freestyle finals, the reigning world champion defeated Chance Marstellar, 4-0, in the first round of the series. In the second round, Marstellar forced a third deciding match after his 2-2 victory. In Round 3, Burroughs grabbed an early 3-0 lead and sealed the 5-0 win in the second period with a takedown.
 
This win qualified Burroughs for his 11th World or Olympic team and gives him a chance to break the freestyle title record that he and John Smith currently share.
