Eagles notes: Campbell named RMAC Wrestler of the Week

CHADRON, Neb. -- Quen Campbell, a redshirt senior from Tifton, Georgia, was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday after placing second at the 44th Annual Midwest Classic.
Campbell suffered a 9-2 decision in the finals of the classic to #7 Gabe Hixenbaugh of Montevallo. Hixenbaugh transferred from West Virginia this season and defeated #1 Gavin Quiocho of Glenville State in the tournament's quarterfinals. The loss against Hixenbaugh made Campbell's record 4-1 for the tournament
Campbell's first round victory was an 8-3 decision over Tyler Masters of Ashland. He then defeated Dale Van Matre of Adams State by fall in 5:00 before having a 4-2 decision over #15 Matthew Chi in the quarterfinals.
A semifinal matchup against #9 Tommy Frezza of Central Missouri was Campbell's fourth victory of the classic. After suffering an early takedown, Campbell dominated the rest of the match to win with a 12-4 major decision.
Campbell and his teammates led CSC to an 8th place finish in Indianapolis. The Eagles will wrestle again on January 6 at 1 p.m. when they host York University.
Poznanovic named RMAC Offensive Player of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Martin Poznanovic, a junior from Uzice, Serbia has been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after averaging 19 points and 6.5 rebounds.
Poznanovic shot 77.3 percent from the field in CSC's 2-0 weekend with victories over Regis and UCCS.
On Saturday against Regis, the junior had 17 points and nine rebounds. He made seven of his nine attempts (.778%) from the field and had four offensive rebounds.
Against UCCS, Poznanovic recorded 21 points and four rebounds while making 10 of his 13 (.769%) shot attempts.
Poznanovic is the first CSC men's basketball player to earn the award this season.
Eagles maintain lead with shape free throw shooting
CHADRON, Neb. --The Chadron State Eagles and the Colorado Springs Mountain Lions had an interesting shooting contest down the stretch of their men's basketball game in Chadron late Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles were leading 82-71 with 80 seconds to play after Jarrett Taylor had made a pair of free throws. Here's a summary of what happened next: The visitors scored 13 points on their final five possessions by making a trio of 3-pointers, plus a layup and a short jumper.
After each of those baskets, the Mountain Lions immediately fouled to stop the clock and put a Chadron State player at the line. The Eagles made nine of the 10 free throws and won the shootout 91-84.
The Eagles have now won four games in a row and enter the Christmas break with a 7-4 season record. At 5-1, they are tied for third place in the RMAC with Colorado Mines. Both Fort Lewis and Colorado Mesa are 5-0 in league play.
The Lions' late surge saw James Ellis sink a trey and a layup before Max Stodard and Hannes Staar each hit long threes and Noah Bach closed the stretch run with a short jumper as time was expiring.
CSC's Taylor was one of two at the line following the sting of intentional fouls. Bryce Latimer sank a pair of free shots and Dalton Patterson made the final six.
Both teams played hard and shot well. The Eagles led for 33 of the 40 minutes and were ahead 41-32 at halftime after Taylor nailed a trey at the buzzer.
Chadron State led by as many as 18 points twice in the second half, but the Mountain Lions' never gave up and used their hot shooting down the stretch to make things intriging.
The Eagles, who were 34 of 62 from the field and 18 of 12 at the free throw line, put five players in double figures.
Martin Poznanovic, the native of Serbia who has become a big-time force in the middle recently, led with a team-high 21 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the field. Latimer had just two points at halftime but finished with 16 and also was credited with eight assists. Josh Robinson was the game's leading rebounder with nine and added 13 points, Peterson had 12 and Taylor 11.
Just six players scored for Colorado Springs, but each reached double-digits. The pacesetter was the 6-foot-8 Stodart, a New Zealand product whose 23 points included three treys. Another stout frontline player, Jesse Iweze, was next with 18, while Ellis scored 12, Martinez 11 and both Baca and Saar 10.
The Lions were 30-60 from the field and 17-22 at the line. Each team had 11 steals.
UCCS is now 5-7 overall and 1-5 in the RMAC.

Eagles shoot 41 free throws in loss to UCCS
CHADRON, Neb. -- A total of 63 fouls were committed in the Chicoine Center Sunday afternoon when the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions defeated the Chadron State women's basketball team 70-54.
Chadron State had three players foul out of the contest while UCCS had one.
After CSC lead 5-3 in the first period, the Mountain Lions scored ten consecutive points to gain an eight-point lead, in which they never lost.
In the third period, UCCS grew its lead to as much as 26 points. Chadron State was 0-5 from the field in the third and only scored from the free throw line where they converted 14 of their 16 attempts. The Eagles were never able to trim the deficit below 13 in the second half.
Due to the quantity of fouls in the game, Chadron State had more attempts from the charity stripe than they did from the field. The Eagles shot 11-35 (31.4%) from three and were 1-9 (11.1%) from beyond the arc. A total of 41 free throws were shot by CSC, who made 31 of those attempts for 75.6 percent.
The Mountain Lions shot one fewer attempt from the charity stripe, converting 24 of them for 60 percent. 18 of their 48 (37.5%) attempts from the field were good while the guests made 10 threes out of 22 attempts (45.5%).
The Eagle offense had its second highest turnover count of the season with 30. The Mountain Lions turned CSC's turnovers into 19 points while CSC scored 14 points off of 17 UCCS turnovers.
Chadron State outrebounded its opponent 36 to 28 and had 11 second chance points in the loss.
Maison White led the visitors with a game high 17 points and added a team high eight rebounds for UCCS.
Allison Olsen, a sophomore from Douglas, Wyoming led the Eagles with 14 points and had seven rebounds. Ashayla Powers, a junior from Longmont, Colorado, was one rebound shy of a double-double, recording 13 points and nine boards. Kyra Tanabe joined Olsen and Powers in double-figures, scoring 10.
Powers, who eclipsed 1000 career points in her career yesterday, had a team high five steals before eventually fouling out of the contest.
The loss drops Chadron State to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in RMAC play. They have the entirety of the holiday break off, returning to action January 6th at MSU-Denver.
Eagles defeat Pacific University in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Chadron State College women's wrestling team finished 1-2 at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday, defeating Pacific University and falling to #15 Wartburg College and #8 Simon Fraser.
In CSC's 34-15 victory over Pacific University, the Eagles won their matches in seven of the ten weight classes. One of the defeats for CSC was a forfeit at 116 pounds.
The Eagles led early in the dual as Mana Chanthasone and Brianna Vollendroff earned forfeits at 101 and 109 pounds, respectively. The first wrestling of the dual occurred at 123 pounds but it did not last long.
Ana Rojas Zamora, a sophomore from Sweeny, Texas recorded a pin against her opponent in 16 seconds.
Pacific responded with two pins of their own at 130 and 136 pounds to score their final ten team points. Karstin Hollen received a forfeit victory at 143 and Emma Meadows earned a 11-0 tech fall victory at 155 pounds.
Maria Arellano earned her first victory of the season at 170 pounds when she pinned Sofia Aragon in 2:45. In the duals final match, Kamila Montenegro, a senior from Las Vegas, pinned her opponent in 2:34 at 191. Montenegro finished the three duals with a 3-0 record, recording two pins and a forfeit.
In Chadron State's 25-21 loss to host Wartburg, Chanthasone, Vollendroff, Meadows and Montenegro were all victorious.
Chanthasone received a forfeit at 101 pounds before Vollendroff gave the Eagles five team points with a pin in 2:33 at 109 pounds.
Wartburg won five straight matches until Meadows was victorious with a 4-2 decision. Montenegro won her match with another pin, this time in 1:37.
Against the eighth ranked Red Leaf's, CSC's only points were scored by Hollen at 143 pounds and Montenegro at 191. While Montenegro won by forfeit, Hollen earned a 9-6 decision over her opponent.
Women's Wrestlings next dual is on January 6 when they host York University in the Chicoine Center.
